This week I attended the the Great Scott Grads Design Exhibiton. It was the graduation show for Central Institute of Technology’s 2015 Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design students. I won’t beat around the bush, the stuff I saw on display was good. Really, really good. It’s no surprise though. Every time I’ve attended I’ve been blown away by the sheer talent in one small group of students. It’s highly impressive, a little terrifying, but mostly very heartwarming as I feel like the design world is just getting better and better judging by the standard entering into the industry.
During and after these graduation shows, I come away with this one quick reminder:
“These students are producing really good work. In fact, their work is generally even better than yours. Pick up yo game!”
Being in the industry for a while grants you increasing professional experience by default. What doesn’t come by default is the improvement in our craft – that comes from practice. It’s easy to forget about honing our craft when we are substitutionally satisfied by the increase in our professional experience. Make sure you separate the two to make sure both are getting a fair amount of attention and you’re keeping up with the new youngens coming through!
Never stop practicing!
